February- the shortest month of the year!

February was a short month, but we still managed to squeeze in lots of learning and activities in Deirdres’ first class. We learned all about Chinese New Year, and discovered that this year is  ‘The Year of the Dog’. We spent time learning facts about China, and located it on our world globe. It is a very big country- in fact, its the 3rd largest country in the world!

We also learned about Emperor Penguins. In Science, we investigated how penguins and polar bears survive in the cold temperatures of Antartica. The blubber experiment was lots of fun, and taught us all about the thick layer of fat that insulates the penguins and polar bears under their skin. It was very interesting!  The end of this month was interrupted by ‘Storm Emma’. All wrapped up in hats, gloves, scarves and coats (unlike the penguins and polar bears), the children managed to have lots of time and fun enjoying the snow- building snowmen and igloos.  Luckily, they didn’t school too much!
